Humber Rescue launches in Storm Eowyn to person in the water

In a testament to their bravery and commitment, Humber Rescue volunteers launched their lifeboat into severe weather conditions during Storm Eowyn to rescue a male in the water near the River Humber on 24 January 2025.

At approximately 14:00, the crew was placed on standby following reports of an incident within the vicinity of the River Humber. With winds exceeding 60mph and rough sea conditions brought by Storm Eowyn, all assets were prepared for immediate response.

Just 15 minutes later, the situation escalated to reports of a person in the water. The team launched into the storm, battling fierce winds and rough seas to quickly reach the scene. A member of the Hull Coastguard Rescue Team demonstrated exceptional quick thinking, throwing a throw line to the casualty and pulling them closer to shore. With their swift actions and the support of Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, the casualty was safely extracted from the water and swiftly transferred into the care of a waiting ambulance for further assistance.

This call-out highlights the dedication, readiness, and close collaboration between Humber Rescue, Hull Coastguard Rescue Team, and Humberside Fire & Rescue Service. Together, we were able to ensure a safe and successful outcome, even in the most difficult conditions. We are proud to work so closely with these outstanding teams and commend their professionalism and rapid response.

Ian Bennett, Coxswain during the callout and part of the four-person crew, described the challenges faced:

“The conditions were some of the toughest we’ve seen, with 60mph winds and a rough sea state making navigation extremely difficult. However, our training and teamwork ensured that we reached the casualty quickly and offer assistance if required. It’s a relief to know they are now in safe hands.”

Dave Roberts, Chairman of Humber Rescue and the incident’s Launch Authority, praised the crew’s quick response and professionalism:

“Today’s callout highlights the incredible dedication of our volunteers. Even in the midst of a powerful storm like Eowyn, they responded without hesitation to save a life. Their courage and skill in such extreme conditions is nothing short of remarkable.”

Paul Beriff, Founder of Humber Rescue, commended the team’s efforts, noting the severity of the weather:

“Launching in 60+mph winds is no small feat, and it speaks volumes about the commitment of our volunteers. These individuals put their own safety on the line to protect others, and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.”

This callout marks Humber Rescue’s 10th of 2025, reinforcing the essential role the organisation plays in safeguarding one of Europe’s busiest waterways.

As always, the charity reminds the public: if you see someone in difficulty near the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
