Hull City Council has appointed PBS Construction Limited to undertake the next phase of a major scheme that will restore two lanes of traffic in each direction on Freetown Way as well as providing improved off-road cycling facilities.
Starting in September, the Hull-based contractor will work on the section of the scheme from the east of Blundell’s Corner up to, and including, the junction with Wright Street.
The works will include:
- revisions and new signals at Wright Street to incorporate new cycle facilities
- A new off-carriageway cycle facility will be created, and footways will be reconstructed
- carriageway alterations to accommodate two lanes of traffic.
It is anticipated this phase will take around six months to complete.
This phase of works follows completion of preparatory works by Balfour Beatty which included:
- the removal of cycle wands on the carriageway
- the carrying out of drainage and utility surveys
- the installation of ducting and the undertaking of trial excavations.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “We appreciate the work Balfour Beatty have done to prepare Freetown Way for the start of this important scheme, which will see two lanes of traffic restored in each direction and new off-road cycle facilities.
“Freetown Way is an important route through the city and we want it to work better for everyone who uses it, whether they are travelling by car, walking or cycling.
“We’d like to thank our residents and businesses for their patience and understanding as we enter this next phase of improvement works.”
While this phase of work is underway, the council will invite contractors to bid for the final phase, enabling swift progress into the remaining works once this stage is complete.
