Lovell Homes has worked with local charity Men in Sheds to create a ‘mini library’ for residents at their Saddlers Grange development just in time for International Book Giving Day.
Situated on Knox Avenue in Howden, the mini library has been crafted by the local Western Wolds Men in Sheds group for the community.
Men in Sheds is a project launched by Age UK to support older men in search of a hobby as well as those who want to get together, share, and learn new skills. It also supports older men who are isolated or disengaged from their community or are experiencing major life changes.
The new community mini library was officially opened on Thursday (February 8) and has already proved a hit with the local residents who came along to the opening. Residents, young and old, are able to take books at their leisure or deposit any unread or unwanted novels.
Richard Woodcock, one of the members from Men in Sheds, worked on the project and installed the mini library. When asked about the project he said:
“It’s been great to work on a project that gives something back to the local community. Men in Sheds has been a perfect way for me to meet new people and learn new skills, but actually using those skills to give back feels incredible. It’s a wonderful community initiative and I can’t wait to see people use the library knowing I helped create it.”
The initiative was spearheaded by Saddlers Grange ‘community champion’, Sarah Maw, who came to Lovell with the idea. She explained:
“The community mini library will make it easier for people of all ages and backgrounds to access a wide range of books for free whenever it is convenient for them. We are hoping that using this mini library will help fuel a love of reading, and foster a strong sense of community through the sharing of books.
With the mini library you can take a book for as long as you need, when you have finished reading it then return it at a time suitable for you. People are welcome to donate books by placing them in the library to share with the community. We will regularly check the mini library to make sure there are plenty of books available and update them as needed. I am really excited to be a part of creating this accessible resource for the people of our community and I look forward to watching it be utilised and grow.”
Colette Ben Tarcha, Regional Sales Director at Lovell Homes, added:
“We’re delighted to bring this mini library to the Saddlers Grange community. Reading is one of life’s simple pleasures and hopefully this will give all of the local residents a chance to find a good book and get stuck in.”
Donations have already been made with the local residents raising money to purchase over 50 books to get the mini library up and running.
